Age-Friendly Community

The City of Solana Beach has joined the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities to improve the community and enhance livability.

Solana Beach Age Friendly Action Plan

Our Partners

  • AARP California
  • The San Diego Foundation
  • San Diego State University Social Policy Institute

The City of Solana Beach is partnering with AARP California, The San Diego Foundation, and San Diego State University Social Policy Institute, to engage and mobilize community organizations and residents in support of joining the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities to ensure that communities where we live are safe, livable, and better support people of all ages. These valuable Partners will help guide our community through the Age-Friendly Network's assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation process.

Our Goal

Our goal is to improve the quality of life for every resident as demographics change. The population of the Unites States is rapidly aging and by 2030, one of every five people in the U.S. will be 65 or older. And, by 2035, the number of adults older than 65 will be greater than the number of children under 18. People of all ages will benefit from the adoption of policies and programs such as making neighborhoods walkable, feature transportation options, enable access to key services, provide opportunities to participate in community activities, and very importantly to support housing that is affordable and adaptable. Age-Friendly Solana Beach looks at equity and aims to work to eliminate disparities to fairly serve all residents, especially older adults. The City of Solana Beach is committed to providing meaningful and relevant services to residents of all ages specifically to older residents with a vision to keep them active and healthy while residing in this city.

Community Survey

We issued a survey to ask about your priorities for helping Solana Beach residents to age well and in place. The survey was available from June 1st to June 17th, 2022.  The survey questions focused on various topics such as, Outdoor Spaces and Public Places, Transportation, Housing, Social Participation, Respect, and Social Inclusion, Work and Civic Engagement, Communications and Information and Community and Health Services.

Listening Sessions

The City held three interactive listening sessions on July 28th and July 29th to help prioritize areas of focus as we create a vision for Solana Beach to be an age-friendly community for all. The Listening Sessions will be held in both English and Spanish. During these listening sessions, participants shared their thoughts about an Age-Friendly Solana Beach and the priorities they think are most important to help the Solana Beach community age well. This insight and input helps us better understand what is important to our residents and to consider how we can foster an Age-Friendly Community. Thank you to everyone who has participated in these listening sessions. Next steps are as follows:

  • Compiling Data from Listening Sessions
  • Comparing it with Survey Data
  • Checking back in with Community through Action Sessions

Action Planning Sessions

The City held three interactive action planning sessions on October 25th and October 27th.  Participants learned about feedback provided thus far and helped to create a vision, goals, and action steps for an age-friendly community for all. These Action Planning Sessions were held in-person and virtually in English. A session was offered in-person in Spanish. Solana Beach residents and service providers were invited to attend.

Stay tuned for updates regarding these next steps:

  • Developing an Action Plan
  • Solana Beach City Council Approval
