Date: May 07 , 2024
Time: 6:00 pm

Do you want to gain confidence in coexisting safely, legally, and courteously with vehicle traffic in Solana Beach and along the coast? Attend a Smart Cycling class held locally!

The Smart Cycling Program is a great opportunity to learn how to ride your bike safely! The program is offered in 2 sessions. A 3-hr Classroom Session orients you to best cycling practices, followed by a 6-hr Road Session where you put what you learned in the classroom to practice.

Smart Cycling is taught by the SD County Bike Coalition in partnership with BikeWalkSolana. The curriculum is certified by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) and taught across the USA. Your instructors have been certified by the LAB to teach Smart Cycling.

Solana Beach residents who sign up and complete both sessions will receive a full refund of their $50 fee!

Session I (Classroom):

This 3-hour classroom session will be held on Tuesday, May 7th at La Colonia Community Center from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm. This classroom session is a pre-requisite for the road session. During this class we cover:

  1. Bicycling and the law
  2. Crashes and how to avoid them
  3. How to drive your bike safely in a variety of road, traffic, and weather conditions day or night.

Session II (Road):

This 6-hour road class is for students who have completed the Classroom Session and will be held on Saturday, May 11th, from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm starting at a BikeWalkSolana member's home. It includes:

  1. Road drills where you will increase your bike handling skills and learn some emergency maneuvers to avoid motor vehicle collisions.
  2. Riding on a variety of local streets and bike paths while practicing proper lane positioning and performing safe and legal turning maneuvers.
  3. About 12 miles of riding with frequent stops. Casual riding pace so feel free to dress for comfort, not for long distance riding.
  4. A multiple choice exam at the end of the class (available in English or Spanish) and a Certificate of Completion is awarded to graduates.

Additional Information

  • Both Sessions are designed for adults, but youth attending with a parent or guardian have been successful.
  • For youth ages 13-16, we require that a parent or guardian also register and complete the class along with the youth, and all youth under 18 must have a parent or guardian drop them off, and sign a waiver. It is recommend that the youth riders participate in the shorter 3-hr City Cycling Class, which will be offered over the summer. Stay tuned for more information on the Solana Beach City Cycling Classes.
  • It is important that parents take this class with their child so that both can learn the skills and road rules.
  • There is no listed age limit for participating in this class, but we will be riding on roads and in areas without bike lanes, so children must be mature, strong riders and good listeners.
  • Electric bikes are welcome.
